From Eicher: "The author's stirring tale centers around his service in the 8th Kentucky Cavalry in which he participated in several actions in the Kentucky campaign of 1862 and had occasional contact with Brig. Gen. John Hunt Morgan. Captured with Morgan in July 1863, Young sat in prisons in Columbus and Chicago before escaping in January 1864. Thereafter, the story relates the adventure of the author's command of the St. Albans Raid, the northernmost action of the war.
