Die Toten: 1967-1993

By Feldmann, Hans-Peter

First Edition. [194 pp.], offset on commercial stock in stiff printed wrappers. Chiefly illustrated. 4to. Very good. Head of spine slightly bump, small area of abrasion to back cover, otherwise fine. [2027]

Archival photobook by conceptual artist Hans-Peter Feldmann. Constrained by the two dates of the title, the book austerely presents photographs of people were killed in Germany during acts of political uprising and terrorism, printed with accompanying death dates in chronological order on rectos only. An appendix at the rear lists the names of the dead in alphabetical order, with brief contextual descriptions of the circumstances of their deaths. The photographs range from the banal (ordinary headshots or candid photographs) to the grisly (photographs of bodies and crime scenes), all apparently taken from contemporaneous press coverage. An understated artist's book making a nonpartisan statement against all forms of political violence.
