[Photo Album Documenting the Life, Family and Travels of a Cuban American]

  • Various places , 1940
By Ares, Ruben
Various places, 1940. Good. 11" x 15". Full leather over flexible card. 58 loose leaves with 406 photographs mostly adhesive mounted and another 32 laid in. Approximately two thirds of the photos are captioned. Album good as all leaves are detached and the leaves themselves are chipped, and prone to more chipping such that handling the album results in flecks of black paper and dirty fingertips; contents good to very good.

This is a mammoth album compiled by an entrepreneurial Cuban American which documents his life in both Cuba and the United States as well as his worldwide travels. It's the creation of one Ruben Ares, who was born in Cuba in 1915 and became a United States Citizen in 1954; a copy of his Certificate of Naturalization is included.

A couple photos taken on the roof of the Havana University Hospital show that Ruben's brother was studying medicine and his sister was studying to be a pharmacist. There are also a few photos of his brother Argelio at the University of Montana in 1947. Many show Ruben and family members in Cuba, including more than one series around his parents' home. Ruben's father owned a cattle ranch and farm in Santa Rita and there are many images showing the ranch, stock, areas of planting and workers during the 1930s. Ruben's father also owned a rice mill and there are several images of Ruben at the mill in 1948.

There are images of Ruben's sister and her family as well as his brother's farm in Veguitas. One series shows Ruben and his brother on the streets of Baltimore in 1947 while another series of ten larger photos were taken inside of a bar and nightclubs in Miami and Baltimore in the 1940s; there are also several photos of Latin American performers.

The collection further includes two of Ruben's business cards and images of his occupational duties. One business card is from Baltimore when Ruben was the manager of a coffee shop and another is from Hialeah, Florida where he was the manager of a women's sportswear manufacturer. One photo shows that Ruben owned and ran a barber shop in Baltimore while another photo from Baltimore in 1947 shows that he ran two other small businesses there: the Pan-American Export & Import Company and the Universal Travel Agency. In that vein is a photo of Ruben in Washington, D.C. with the caption, "Me-coming out of the US Dept of Commerce Building -I was there obtaining a license for a shipment of lard and soybean oil to Cuba and Venezuela." Another shows him in Atlantic City in 1947 for the 100th anniversary of the American Medical Association where he was attached to the delegation of the Dominican Republic. There are also series of photos documenting Ruben's worldwide travel including trips to Japan, Jamaica, Egypt, Algeria, and Tunisia. A couple of photos in each locale show he spent time in the Philippines, Italy, and Iraq as well.

A massive album, worthy of deeper research.
