SELF-CONTROL A NOVEL (3 volumes)
- Hardcover
- Edinburgh: George Ramsay & Co, 1811
Edinburgh: George Ramsay & Co, 1811. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. VG+. Mary Brunton (1778-1818) was a Scottish novelist, whose work has been seen as redefining femininity. Self-Control was her first novel, followed by Discipline in 1814. Brunton was a direct contemporary of Jane Austen; Austen and her family read and enjoyed Self-Control, though she was bemused by some of its narrative extravagance. In three volumes, a popular format for British novels at the time, here bound in mustard-colored half leather over marbleized boards, gilt to spine and brown and black leather labels for title and volume, marbleized edges. Moderate edgewear. Solidly bound, internals fine. Scarce as a complete set in its original edition. With the baronial bookplate of Robert John Verney, Lord Willoughby de Broke (1809-1862).
