He gives his first hand account of a career aboard whalers bound from Hull, England through the Davis's Straits, around Greenland, and in other whale grounds of the Arctic region. Throughout, the author supplies details of the environment in the far North, native culture and wildlife, shipboard life and management, incidents of the crew members, as well as developments of the industry over a lengthy career spanning many voyages.
