1987. First Edition. Signed. STETTNER, Louis. Chrysler Building from Times Square. [New York: Louis Stettner, 1987]. Large octavo, matted and framed gelatin silver photographic print, measuring 11 by 13.5 inches including frame. $1750.Gelatin silver print of a striking black-and-white image of the Chrysler building, signed in pencil by artist Louis Stettner.Praised by Brassaï as a photographer who revealed the world ""with utmost accuracy and the simplicity of great art"" (Early Joys), Brooklyn-born Louis Stettner was ""a consummate street photographer in the Cartier-Bresson, Atget and, well, Weegee tradition"" (New York Times). About his native city, he said ""New York City is where I have lived for most my life, amidst the smoke, fumes, the bustle and the still moments or stray corners that have sometimes touched eternity. It has shaped and formed me and I in turn have constantly sought to come to grips with its significance as a place and above all, with the people that live in it. My photographs are acts of eloquent homage and deep remorse about the City."" This photograph of the Chrysler building, taken from an unusual angle, was one of Stettner's later New York images and was included in his Midtown collection. Photographer's blindstamp along lower right edge. A dramatic signed, framed photograph in excellent condition.
