Bound without ads in three quarter black polished calf with marbled paper boards, backstrips gilt with red title labels, plain endpapers. A little rubbed, hinges cracked but sound, contents very lightly foxed, long tear repaired in Vol. 1 K2. Early ownership inscription of Clement W. Lea in purple ink on each title page.

"Our Mutual Friend had a mixed reception (the young Henry James's harshly dismissive review in The Nation is notorious) but its stock has risen dramatically in recent years and it is now generally regarded as one of his very greatest works" (ODNB). with the three page postscript to the rear of Volume II, and with 'Pricipal' for 'Principal' to Volume II page 115, 14 lines up from the bottom.
