New York: np, 1979. first edition. Very Good. LARGE PHOTOGRAPH OF TRUMAN CAPOTE, INSCRIBED BY CAPOTE TO ANDY WARHOL. THE PRINT USED AS THE CENTERFOLD FOR WARHOL’S FAMOUS INTERVIEW WITH CAPOTE IN INTERVIEW MAGAZINE. FROM THE ANDY WARHOL COLLECTION. “for Andy Love Truman”

Fabulous portrait from 1979 of a dapper Capote staring straight into the camera looking happy (and perhaps a little mischievous). This exact print was used for the centerfold of the famous Warhol interview with Capote published as the feature in the January 1979 issue of Interview magazine. To call Warhol’s article an “interview” though is perhaps a little misleading. It’s more of a record of a day in the life of Capote and Warhol and as such, it’s unfiltered and extremely revealing.

Warhol had a bit of a lifelong fascination with Capote, with Capote reporting:

“When he was a child, Andy Warhol had this obsession about me and used to write me from Pittsburgh . . . When he came to New York, he used to stand outside my house, just stand out there all day waiting for me to come out. He wanted to become a friend of mine, wanted to speak to me, to talk to me. He nearly drove me crazy.”

And Warhol admitting:

”I used to write to Truman every day for years until his mother told me to stop it. She did. She called me up and said it. She was really sweet.” [Quotes from “The Polaroid Production Line,” The Guardian, 5 October 2008].

In 1979, by the time this photo was taken, Warhol and Capote’s relationship had evolved into a deep friendship. This photo - inscribed by Capote “for Andy Love Truman” – must have held great personal significance for Warhol; it was part of his collection when he died.

The photo was most likely taken by Barry McKinley, who is credited for taking the images for the Interview article.

With pencil and ink production markings and the official Warhol Collection Sale (Sotheby’s 1988, Lot 2896) stamp on back. New York: 1979. Some very light, subtle creasing. Photo: 11x17 inches. Archivally framed to an overall size of 16x19.5 inches. Provenance: The Andy Warhol Collection, sold Sotheby's 1988, Lot 2896.
