The Letters and Works of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu
- Hardcover
- London: Richard Bentley, 1837
London: Richard Bentley, 1837. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. Three volumes. 8vo. Half brown leather. Spines in five compartments with raised bands, tooled in blind and with the title tooled in gilt. Marbled paper sides; yellow endpapers. The text blocks have occasional light staining; the frontispiece to volume 2 is stained along the bottom, not affecting the image; the bindings are lightly rubbed but the paper sides are worn on the edges. Still a very good set.
The author was a trailblazing aristocrat known for two major achievements: the introduction of smallpox vaccination to Britain, and an in-person description of Turkish society, including glimpses of the lives of Turkish women. She was also a major advocate for the education of women.,
