Reverdy Johnson (1796-1876) was an American politician and defense attorney from Maryland, who served as Zachary Taylor's U.S. Attorney General, Senator from Maryland (1863 -1868) at the time of this letter, and later 23rd United States Minister to the United Kingdom.
