Anarchism and Other Essays is the first of six books published by Emma Goldman (1869 - 1940) and one of the central anarchist texts of her era. The essays, which were first published in Goldman's anarchist magazine Mother Earth, capture her philosophy of direct action, gender equality, communist principles of cooperation and mutual aid, and an individualistic spirit that prioritized "the freest possible expression of all the latent powers of the individual." Goldman, a powerful writer and a singular public speaker, was a controversial figure from the start of her career, both among other anarchists and the general public: her feminist convictions set her apart from both her male counterparts and from the women's suffrage movement, which Goldman perceived as overly middle-class and conservative, and her support for birth control, free sexuality, and direct action drew constant public criticism. Still, Goldman's Anarchism and Other Essays became one of the most recognizable anarchist publications of the early twentieth century and influenced an emerging group of feminist anarchists that continued to develop Goldman's liberatory philosophies into the mid-twentieth century and beyond. Very Good +.
