- SIGNED
- Londonderry, PA , 1809
Londonderry, PA, 1809. Very Good. Londonderry, Dauphin County, PA: April 1, 1809. Original manuscript deed of indenture on parchment (54x76cm); previous folds, light soil, else Very Good or better. The verso is titled on a single panel, "Deed / John Forney & Wife to Michael Hawke for 83.45 dollars" adorned with a very handsome calligraphic peacock.
Deed of indenture between Londonderry farmers John and Elizabeth Forney and Michael Hawke (also a farmer), relating to the purchase of parcels of land in the township for 1500 pounds. The land stretched, as described here, from a specific hickory tree to a fallen white ash and a black oak. The indenture is signed by two witnesses, Henry McCormick and Levi Hollingsworth, as well as John and Elizabeth Foley, the latter signing her name simply with her mark, a crude "X." Londonderry is probably best known in modern memory as the site of the Three Mile Island accident which took place 160 years later, almost to the day.
