By Beaumont, J.C.H.
New York: Frederick A. Stokes, n.d.. Rare. "Dr. Beaumont has been for many years one of the principle medical officers of the White Star Line, and has practiced not only the art of Aesculapius but also the gentler art of making friends. In his many trips across "The Herring Pond" he has come to know nearly every European and American celebrity---not excluding Barnum and Bailey's "Freaks"---and he has many good stories to tell. Further, in this entertaining book Dr. Beaumont relates some very interesting episodes of life at sea during the Great War, and offers some meditative reflections on certain curious social phases that are very definitely Post War". In this often humorous memoir by the Surgeon of the R.M.S. Majestic, White Star Line, Beaumont brings us on voyages between as diverse destinations as London, Boston, the Mediterranean, and New Zealand. He comments on everyone from crew and third-class right on up through first-class passengers, interspersed with such entertaining chapters as "With Barnum and Bailey's Circus on the Atlantic" and "Folks I Have Met". Illustrated with black and white photographs. This book is undated, though a previous owner has insribed it with a signature and "Jan 12, 1929". It is bound in brown cloth stamped with gold lettering. Binding appears firm, though inner hinges have been protected/reinforced with white linen tape. Very slightly rubbed corners, and a small area of wear on the upper left corner between spine and front cover. Very good condition. . 21.25 cm. ix, 298 pp. b/w frontspiece. b/w plates
