Weapons of Moroland Mindanao Philippines

Mindamao, Philippines, 1950. Filipino souvenir, fairly common as a type of souvenir from Mindanao, but one that can vary quite a bit. Ours we believe is vintage, meaning mid-20th century, with 30 pieces or specimens of miniature weaponry attached to the shield, and we believe that much of the painted work was done by hand, including the rather lovely painted imagery. We don't represent that ours is truly unique, as one can surely find other examples similar and one might say interchangeable, but we do think ours is a well above average example. A single knife is missing its blade -- we have the handle. Otherwise, ours is complete, and commonly one encounters these with more losses than ours. Also, ours has a carved shape that is a bit more intricate than others, as the painted ribbon-ing at the base is continued with the symmetrical swoops upward in the carving. The dimensions, at the tallest and widest, 45 and 40, respectively. There is some minor surface loss -- pieces of wood chipped off. A rather fun, and singular, sort of souvenir from an exotic part of the world.
