The study treats the traditions of allegories during the Baroque, its preconditions, rhetoric, and emblematics, allegories in tragedies, and the crisis of the allegory around 1700 and in the 18th Century, its reconstitution and the development of terms in the exchange between Gottsched and Lessing. Contains a chapter on old forms of allegory and new intentions, and its role in nature poetry of the enlightenment, plus treats its revaluation at the end of the enlightenment with a chapter on metamorphoses of the allegory by Herder and Schiller.
