Pulcinella, commissioned by the Russian impresario and founder of the Ballets Russes, Sergei Diaghilev (1872-1929), was first performed in Paris at the Opéra on 15 May 1920 with Ernest Ansermet conducting. The libretto and choreography were by Léonide Massine, with costumes and sets designed by Pablo Picasso.
