The inspector Elizabeth Beardsley Butler makes note of locations that lacked proper ventilation and sunlight, a proper dining hall and sitting room, or seating for its employees. Photographs depict the interior of several establishments with and without staff, as well as a candid portrait of a cash girl who looks to be about ten years old.
