- hardcover
- Norfolk: Burke & Gregory, Printers, 1907
Norfolk: Burke & Gregory, Printers, 1907. hardcover. Good. Hardcover, grey cloth boards with black lettering & decoration to front boards, floral endpapers, frontispiece of church, full-page ads throughout, 194 pp. Contributors' names noted by each recipe. Both hinges exposed, general wear to covers, some toning to pages. Previous owner has marked some interesting pickle recipes: Mustard Pickle, Cream Chow-Chow,and Seven-Year-Old Pickle in Two Days. Perhaps most interesting is that this cookbook has a recipe for Lollypop. "According to the book Food for Thought: Extraordinary Little Chronicles of the World, they were invented by George Smith of New Haven, Connecticut, who started making large hard candies mounted on sticks in 1908." Sorry, George, but in this cookbook Mrs. T.F. Rogers predates that name by a year! Well, maybe not: these lollypops do not mention sticks, just moulds. Also, they include milk, wine, eggs--not normal ingredients for what we think of today as lollypops.
