The Mexican Suitcase

The Rediscovered Spanish Civil War Negatives of Capa, Chim and Taro

  • Gottingen: Steidl, 2010
By Young, Cynthia (Editor)

Two volumes, both new in original shrink wrap, housed in the publisher's original cardboard case. Illustrated throughout with b/w and color reproductions of contact sheets, negatives, period magazines, maps, and documentary material. The books are new and the case shows only minor wear.

Published jointly by Steidl and the International Center of Photography, New York to accompany the landmark exhibition held there in 2011. The rediscovery of the negatives in 2007 was considered one of the most important archival recoveries in modern photography and illustrates how Capa, Taro, and Chim fundamentally shaped modern photojournalism through their emotionally immediate and politically engaged coverage of the Spanish Civil War. The archive demonstrates the emergence of the modern photographic essay and combat reportage.
