Williams, Leroy "Fathead". Trinidad & Tobago Calypso Hits - 1969 [Cover title]
- [Port-of-Spain, Trinidad]: [N.P.], 1969
[Port-of-Spain, Trinidad]: [N.P.], 1969. Very good. 8¼" x 5 ". Stapled pictorial wrappers. Pp. [24]. Very good: penciled price ($1) to top corner of front wrap; a few small dings and creases; the occasional scuff or spot.
This is a rare publication promoting "current Calypso hits," musicians and local businesses in Trinidad and Tobago, compiled by a writer and sports journalist, Leroy "Fathead" Williams.
All we could learn about Williams was that he covered horse racing and cricket on the island, and penned similar editions dedicated to calypso music and the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival, issued (per scant holdings in OCLC) between 1971 and 1992.
This booklet contains a foreword by "His Worship" the Mayor of Port-of-Spain, J. Hamilton Holder, expressing his "full praise to Mr. Williams" for compiling this "handbook, which should be a veritable tourists' delight." He said the book "preserves permanent form, the contemporary front-runners, the tunes which will set the tempo during the pre-lenten fun fest, so deeply entwined in national consciousness." It holds the lyrics to 16 calypso songs (attributed to musicians like "The Mighty Prowler," "Lord Pretender" and "Mighty Duke") as well as nine photographic images of the artists and eleven ads for local businesses such as "The American Stores, Trinidad's Leading Furniture Dealers," a drug store, bakery and insurance agency. There are also full page ads for du Maurier cigarettes and Coca-Cola, the latter with an image of a Caribbean woman.
An illustrated homage to calypso music, welcoming visitors to Carnival. No holdings were located in OCLC.
