One of the first American titles to have an engraved vignette. This copy has the misprint "when Gilead" on the title page. [see: Stoddard and Whitesell 1144]. Plain leather spine and corners (chipped, eroded) and marbled boards. Joints cracked, front board nearly detached. Bookplate of Mary Porter, Chicago, on front pastedown; another previous owner's signature on the vignette title page. Pierpont (1785-1866), grandfather of J.P. Morgan, was a reformer, abolitionist, and an advocate for women's suffrage.
