Accompanied by the original mailing envelope from the Harry S. Truman Library, postmarked February 19, 1970, together with the original Truman Library shipping label addressed to Leslie Bricusse.

Among the most important presidential memoirs of the twentieth century, Truman's two-volume autobiography chronicles the extraordinary years spanning the end of the Second World War, the atomic age, the Marshall Plan, the Berlin Airlift, the recognition of Israel, the founding of NATO, and the Korean War. Written in Truman's famously direct and unpretentious style, the memoirs remain foundational documents of postwar American political history.

What distinguishes this set is its remarkable association to Leslie Bricusse, one of the great songwriters of the modern era. By 1970, when the books were evidently sent from the Truman Library, Bricusse had already achieved international fame through works such as Goldfinger, Doctor Dolittle, and the soon-to-follow Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.

The juxtaposition is both unexpected and compelling: an American president of the wartime generation presenting his personal memoirs to one of Britain's most celebrated lyricists and composers.

The survival of the original Truman Library mailing envelope and shipping label elevates the set considerably beyond the usual category of signed presidential books, providing tangible evidence of provenance and presentation.

An exceptionally attractive presidential association set linking the White House and Broadway-Hollywood musical history across two generations of American cultural life.
