Toledo, Ohio: Owens - Corning Fiberglass Corporation, 1939. Very good. Woven bookmark, with its original protective folder / advertising brochure and its glassine envelope; bookmark - 8 1/2 x 1 1/2, white fibers - with the following printed on it in blue: "Made at Glass Center, New York World's Fair 1939, Fiberglas, 100% Pure Glass;" fringed ends unraveled a bit; in about very good condition; brochure - 7 1/2 x 2; single sheet of card stock - folded and printed in white; minor wear along spine - in very good to near fine condition; envelope - 8 x 2 1/2; plain, semi-transparent, glassine paper with a bit of darkening to seams - in very good condition.Although the making of coarse glass fibers could be dated back to ancient Egypt, the first company to successfully manufacture and commercialize fiberglass on an industrial scale was the Owens - Corning Fiberglas Corporation in Toledo, Ohio. A lab mishap at Owens-Illinois Glass Company resulted in fine glass fibers, which were later adapted into a steam-blown manufacturing process in 1932. The company would form a partnership with Corning Glass Works in 1935 and would first introduce it as a revolutionary consumer and industrial material at the 1939 New York World's Fair.
