A foundational 19th century medical text, it explores the physiological, physical, and moral states of women across puberty, pregnancy, menstruation, and menopause. Dr. Meigs, the translator, is noted in medical history for advocating against the usage of anesthesia during childbirth and against the use of sanitary practices to prevent the transmission of postpartum infections. The text is heavily influenced by his traditionalist views (see the chapters on Hysteria and Nymphomania amongst others).
