While George Whipple and Allen Whipple were not related, the two men were contemporaries whose lives intersected in an unlikely way. George Hoyt Whipple contracted severe malaria while working in Panama and was admitted to Presbyterian Hospital in New York. There, a young intern named Allen Whipple helped care for him. This encounter sparked a lifelong friendship between the two doctors. Photograph of Allen Whipple measures 8 in. x 10 in.; signature is faded but legible.
