This manual is one of the clearest, most detailed expositions of actual monitorial practice for both boys and girls of the period. Its text was revised and adapted from a manual published in 1816 by the British and Foreign School Society. "It is committed to the press, with a belief, that a Lancasterian Text Book, it will be found well calculated for the use of teachers, and for general information." The four plates show classroom organization, apparatus and furniture, and grouping of students with monitors, This copy bears the ownership signature of New York politician, senator and friend of Martin van Buren, Charles Edward Dudley (1780-1841) - see DAB.
