Written in the form of letters, Dr. Pielat considers various subjects and philosophies on them. Pielat was a 17th century French surgeon who served as the physician to the Dutch fleet commanded by the Admiral Michiele de Ruyter. Most of his writings are confined to the battles that he witnessed and are military in nature.
