By FADEN, William and STEDMAN, Charles
London, 1793. Map. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 19" x 16.75". Foxing and toning with creases and repairs to overlay, otherwise in good condition. Additional overlay measures 6" x 9".

This rare plan of Bunker Hill is one of the most prized of William Faden's battle plans of the American Revolution. Based on the work of Captain John Montressor, the map shows the American fort at Breed's Hill, the site of one of the war's most significant early battles, which was mistakenly named after the adjacent Bunker Hill. The map illustrates the details of the battle in two phases: the main map shows the battlefield, while an attached flap--difficult to find in this condition--shows the action of the fight. A key in the lower left of the map describes both of the plans. Geographical and topographical details, major routes, street plan, forts, ships and waterways are all included. Originally printed by Faden in 1787, this map was published in Stedman's "History of the American War" in 1794. Overlay flap still attached. Original folds as issued. Some chips to margins, with foxing toning, tape residue and stains. William Faden (1750-1836) was an 18th century English cartographer and publisher. Faden is best known for his important publication of the North American Atlas, which covered a region of particular interest to him. The map provides great insight to a defining battle in American history.
