- New York: Fortune, 1936
New York: Fortune, 1936. Pictorial map. Color lithograph. Measures 13 3/4" x 22 3/8"
This infographic world map visualizes the global flow, production, and concentration of gold during the interwar monetary crisis, following "the spectacular gold event of 1934-1935." This refers to FDR's Gold Reserve Act of 1934, the collapse of the gold standard, and the explosive rise in gold production during the Depression. The map is colored to show gold production, and particularly highlights South African dominance in gold mining, the accumulation of reserves in the United States and France, and the decline of British financial supremacy. Illustrations show important ships sunk during the 20th century believed to contain gold. In excellent condition. This map was illustrated by L.H. Appleton and appeared in the February 1936 issue of Fortune Magazine.
LeRoy H. Appleton (1893-1982) was an American artist and illustrator. He produced book illustrations.
