The Independent Chronicle and Universal Advertiser Vol. XXXII, No. 2036 -- French Seizure of American Ship "Pigou

Boston, Massachusetts: Adams & Rhoades, 1800. Fair. Toned with dust soiling, spotting, short tears, including one large short tear to spine nearly detaching the two leaves.. A September, 1800 issue of The Independent Chronicle and Universal Advertiser, a newspaper that began in Salem in 1768 and continued on in the present form in Boston between 1776 and 1840. The entirety of the first page is devoted to proceedings surrounding the 1799 "Pigou" shipping incident, in which two French frigates seized the American ship and its cargo, later to be released with damages. The event caused an uproar, and inflamed tensions between the two nations. Other news stories include: a letter to the editor, detailing a slave uprising; marriage and death announcements; ship arrivals in the Port of Boston; and various advertisements for everything from land to smallpox inoculations.
