Manas Viejas Tarde Se Olivan [caption title]

  • Mexico , 1820
By [Mexico]. [Censorship]
Mexico, 1820. About very good.. [4]pp., on a small quarto bifolium. Removed from a sammelband, with remnants of old stitching still present. A bit rough along gutter, with some minor losses not affecting text. Otherwise, light tanning and dust soiling. A Mexico City bookseller, Manuel Recio, here comically describes an undercover visit by a government censor to his bookshop, who sought to confiscate a publication recently proscribed by the Inquisition. Recio sold, published, and wrote pamphlets relating to press freedom, and stocked books from Philadelphia bookseller Mathew Carey through his agent in Mexico, Thomas Robeson. OCLC locates four copies in U.S. institutions, at Yale, Berkeley, Lehigh, and the JCB.
