London: W. Lewis. Very Good+. 1820. Hardcover. From OCLC: "The present work is probably a reprint of the plates (or a portion of the plates) published as: Naval victories : a series of engravings representing the naval engagements of Great Britain, from original drawings made by officers who were in the actions represented ; engraved by J. Sutherland (London: Pyall & Stroud, 1820)." 14 1/2 by 10 1/2 inches in contemporary 1/4 leather and cloth. Restored and rebound with new endpapers but retaining the original board covers and gilt pictorial backstrip - the work done by Baker Bindery of Anniston, Alabama. The restoration primarily involved modest tissue repairs to the preliminaries and the final three leaves in the inner hinge. Complete with all 42 color aquatint engravings mounted to larger sheets. 40 of the illustrations are of famous naval battles/victories and the frontis and final illustrations are of naval monuments. A very few of the illustrations show modest foxing but most are quite clean and bright. The work is scarce with OCLC showing only two institutional holdings - one in New Zealand and the other at Yale. .
