San Diego: Brighton Press, 1990. First Edition. Clamshell box by David Brock. Fine. Like New mostly.. DeLoss McGraw. No. 25 of 90 copies in limitation. Stunning color plates thickly painted to the point that one would perceive the plates as entirely painted, perhaps, and not just richly painted woodcuts. The modernist artwork has elements of Surrealism, abstraction, deliberately naivete, primitivism, Fauvism, etc. etc. We aren't saying that each illustration has all of these elements fused together, but rather one sees one influence here, another there. Poems are Japanese Tankas by Tamiko Abe, Akitaka Uhimura, Kancko Murayama and Isamu Nagase. The clamshell box is 56 by 19 cm, and 3 cm deep. The leaves within are 54 by 17.5 cm. Unpaginated, 25 leaves, counting artwork. The artwork is accompanied by "tissue guards" which are here of clear mylar, and these we aren't counting in our leaf count. The artist's book was printed on luxurious linen paper, and clearly attention was given to every element of quality. The only issue of the whole package is that the clamshell box has a band of vaguely white discoloration or color loss, perhaps 2 cm wide, on its back, and two shorter bands nearby. These look like simply embedded dust, and they are faint. While we think they should be erasable, we have been unable to.
