One of 750 numbered copies signed by Costain on the limitation page, this being number 136, issued by Doubleday & Company, Inc. of Garden City, New York, in 1952, preceding the first trade edition. The novel became one of Costain's best-known works and served as the basis for the 1954 Warner Brothers film directed by Victor Saville, and Paul Newman's motion picture debut.
