Evanston, WY, 1903. Lithographed map, 18 x 32 inches. Old folds, a few small bumps to edges. Very good plus. A rare and early Wyoming oil field map showing the activity of the Standard Reserve Oil Company and other oil and gas wells in Uinta County at the turn of the 20th century. Standard's lands are represented by hachures, while oil wells are identified with small illustrations scattered across the map's surface area. A former owner has filled in three small plots of land in Range 117 West with blue "X" marks. To the right of the map is a large illustration of a cross-section showing the "Approximate Log of the Union Pacific Oil Well Near Spring Valley." This illustration shows the well at almost 1200 feet having drilled through shale, stone, clay, dark amber oil, oil sand, and dark green oil. A fascinating and early western oil map, with only five copies in OCLC, at Stanford, Yale, SMU, and the universities of Utah and Wyoming.
