WHITE FANG

  • 1907
By London, Jack
1907. London: Methuen & Co., (1907). 40 pp ads dated October 1906. Original light blue-grey cloth pictorially decorated in white and black. First English Edition of Jack London's famous tale about a savage half-wolf/half-dog in the Yukon, who becomes domesticated -- a complementary volume to THE CALL OF THE WILD (1903), which had followed a dog going in the opposite direction. Though bearing ads dated October 1906 (the publication month of the 1906-dated US edition), this UK edition was "announced" in January 1907 and "listed" the following month. Though the UK edition shares the same binding as the US, these Methuen leaves were printed in Edinburgh. While the US edition has eight color plates by Charles Livingston Bull, the UK edition has only the frontispiece one. This is a very good-plus copy (spine a bit sunned, minor rubbing at the extremities). See Blanck 11896. This UK edition is understandably much scarcer than the US: on the day we are listing this book, there are thirteen US copies on the market, but only one UK one.
