MAUROIS (André): PATAPOUFS & FILIFERS. Paris: Paul Hartmann, 1930. With 75 illustrations by Jean Bruller, mostly in color. 4to, 92pp + colophon; original wrappers with front cover printed in red and black, the whole bound inside a vintage 3/4 orange cloth with patterned cloth sides. Fine copy.
First edition of this famous children's book, its name translating to "Chubby-Puffs and Skinny-Beans".; it was translated into English as Fattypuffs and Thinifers in 1941. With a magnificent title page and 75 superb illustrations by Jean Bruller accompanying the text. Maurois's tale is no mere entertainment for children; rather, it is a sort of parable and utopian adventure denouncing the rise of Nazism (*Mein Kampf* was published in 1925). The author seeks to demonstrate that human differences—whether physical or cultural—can be sources of happiness rather than war.
