Ehrlich & Apolant performed thousands of tumor-grafting experiments with mice after Jensen's discovery that mouse tumors are malignant and transplantable (1903; G-M 2628). Ehrlich coined the term "athrepsia", signifying exhaustion of the nutrients for tumor growth, to account for the failure of a second graft to grow in an animal already carrying a tumor. D.S.B.
