[Illustrated Handbill/Trade Card]
by DOYLE Thomas
Providence, R.I: Thomas Doyle, . . Single sheet, printed on one side only, 6 15/16 x 5 15/15 inches, on a sheet measuring 8 3/8 x 6 3/4 inches (unequal margins), minor soiling. A most appealing little piece: within a Greek key border, with corner pieces of a stylized flower within a circle, within a square; at top, vignette of two figures on either side of a coat of arms showing a beaver felling a tree with the motto "Assiduity" to the left, an American harvester with a scythe and sheaf of wheat and to the left, a Native American with a dog and holding a broken bow, all surmounted by a sailing vessel--strangely this appears to be a version of the arms of Albany, N.Y., this vignette is surrounded on three sides by button decorations. Below this, a house with on either side [the same cut], a seated woman beside a Corinthian column and wheel, with inset a blacksmith's arm and in the background Another row of button decorations and bellow that "SOLD WHOLESALE AND RETAIL BY | THOMAS DOYLE, | At the Providence ACCOUNT BOOK Manufactory, | NO. 28 MARKET STREET. | [pointing finger] Books Bound in the best and most Durable manner. [pointing finger]"The date is calculated by found imprints of Thomas Doyle, the appearance of the cuts and the paper tone. (Inventory #: 3068)
