He was Fillmore's Secretary of the Navy and organized Perry's expedition to Japan and Kane's second Arctic voyage. He was a Union supporter despite his mother coming from a prominent Virginia family--he wrote a chapter of Thackeray's Virginians, and was a friend of Irving and Cooper (Inventory #: 2235)
