Annawan was a farming community in Wisconsin. It no longer exists. The town was located near the present day city of Menonomie close to the border with Minnesota. This broadside was issued by local farmers calling for a public meeting (May 10, 1860) in response to the local railroad imposing a one cent a bushel tax on all grain shipped out of Annawan. This broadside is among the earliest artifacts of people vs. railroads and railroad rates in the northwestern territories. This conflict shifted to the courts (Peik vs. Chicago & Northwestern, 1876) culminating in cases into the late 1920s before the Supreme Court. Unlocated.
