An important book that laid the foundation for modern solid state physics and Born's pioneering efforts in quantum mechanics. The work on crystal lattices (offered here) was to be a short journal article but Born's inquiry proved so productive that the manuscript soon became a book. The research is an inquiry into the nature of crystals at the atomic level. Born succeeded in deriving the formulae for the essential optical, thermal, and electric properties of crystals. Published during the war in Germany it did not receive wide circulation. DSB XV, 39-44.
