This appears to be a remainder issue of two works issued by the author in 1819 and 1820. Under directions to the binder the title and prelims. of vol. 2 were to be cancelled (the case in this copy) when bound up together. Smart was a prolific author in the field of language and philosophy. He describes himself as a public reader of Shakespeare who is offering a new principle that guides every speaker. The second volume is devoted to the examples of how his new theory operates in the theatre. DNB XVIII, 385.
