An important paper in geophysics and electromagnetism. Stormer is best known for his studies of the polar aurora. The paper offered here is his mathematical analysis of the trajectories of charged particles in a dipole magnetic field. Stormer's analysis revealed that only 'some' trajectories were possible, leading him to postulate a circular electric current in the equatorial plane. His work proved essential in explaining the latitudinal variation in cosmic radiation and the discovery of the Van Allen Belts of radiation surrounding the earth.
