By Winslow, Forbes
London: J Churchill, 1860. First Edition.. orig. publisher's cloth.. A fine copy.. 8vo.

Winslow's best and most important book. The work was originally intended to serve as an introduction to a projected 2 vol. set that never appeared. Winslow surveys the symptomatology of early cerebral and mental disease based on his wide ranging experience and the literature of the day. The book offers detailed accounts of topics hardly mentioned by others, e.g., a chapter devoted to the confessions of patients recovering from insanity; chapter 8 of the book where Winslow provides the first insight into certain diagnostic tests for psychic disorders. In addition to this he comments favorably on the possibility and study of what he termed chemico cerebral pathology as a basis for the study of abnormal states or conditions. A book never found in this condition. See Hunter/McAlpine.
