Edinburgh: C Elliot, 1785/'84. New Edition/First Edition.. Full contemporary calf.. A very good copy; endpapers replaced; joints strengthened.. 8vo. The Smellie has 41 copper eng. plates.
Smellie's anatomical plates are generally regarded to be suprerior to anything in the 18th century. Spencer in his History of British Midwifery credits Smellie with producing a book that was responsible for the spread of correct ideas of labor than any other book published. The edition offered here is in the much reduced 8vo. format. The plates, however, retain their detail and clarity. The book in this format contains two additional plates not found in the original. The Smellie is here bound up with Hamilton's book. Hamilton was the first prof. of midwifery at Edinburgh. Blake p. 420 & 196; Heirs of Hipp., #826 citing the first; see G-M.
