By Bertrandi, Ambroise
Paris: T Barrois, 1769. First French Edition.. Full contemporary calf.. Fine.. 8vo. Four folding copper engraved plates of various kinds of surgical instruments.

Bertrandi was prof. of anatomy and surgery at Turin. He is known for his books on the eye and liver but his most important work is the treatise on surgery offered here in the French translation of Sollier de la Romillas. Bertrandi was an exceptionally skilled physician and surgeon going so far as to attempt to correct congenital abnormalities of the neural system (see Mettler). What is exceptional about the book offered here is that the last section is devoted to a detailed explanation of surgical instruments and their use that are illustrated on the plates. In many instances Bertrandi discusses their origin, design and specific use. The volume also contains the eulogy of Bertrandi by Louis. Blake p. 45; Hirsch I, 508-'09.
