Bucolica, Georgica et Aeneis ....

  • SIGNED Contemporary (somewhat later?) three-quarter leather.
  • Paris: Firmin Didot, 1791
By Vergilius Maro, Publius
Paris: Firmin Didot, 1791. Later Printing.. Contemporary (somewhat later?) three-quarter leather.. A good copy; joint and backstrip scuffed; some wear to the corners; internally occ. light spotting but very good; untrimmed.. Folio. 2 leaves, [4], 513 pp.; note - [4] page intro. bound after p. 12 of text.

Schweiger states: ' ... correct und gut gedruckt ....' This, however, is the first and last good thing he mentions about the printing. This printing of Vergil was long in the making and intended to supersede the Baskerville edition in beauty. Although a handome book Wroth, Schweiger, Brunet etc. all feel the typeface and selection of format is not a success. It is one of a hundred copies produced and is signed and numbered for the publisher on the verso of the last leaf. Schweiger, Latin, II,2, 1180; Brunet V, 1293; see Wroth, p. 221.
