Sanderson was an American who spent nearly a two years in Paris. The account of his stay was issued as Sketches .... and followed with this novel based on his experiences. The book was quite successful and was immediately published in London and in a French translation in Paris. There was an English edition of his letters in 1838 published by Colburn.
