A 'disgusting outrage' is how Perceval characterised his incarceration for madness in the early 1830s. He was forced into asylums on three separate occasions between 1831 ans 1833. He was in the 'care' of a Dr. Fox near Bristol. The experiences related in this memoir were typical of the treatment of the day. As a result of his experiences Perceval spent the remainder of his life seeking to redress the conditions and protect those who were unjustifiably confined.
